Self hypnosis or affirmations?

Self-Hypnosis or Affirmations?

affirmations vs self-hypnosisHave you ever had the experience of looking in a mirror with a forced smile on your face, saying something like, “Every day, in every way, I’m getting better and better”?

All the while thinking, “No, I’m not”.

The part of your mind that helps you maintain a grasp on reality, may not agree that ‘every day, in every way, you’re getting better and better’.

Self-hypnosis can help.

That part of the mind is called the critical factor. It evaluates things — it judges them. It’s a valuable resource for us. Otherwise, if someone came up to us and said, “It’s Tuesday, and that means pigs can fly,” we would probably believe them. The critical factor helps keep us grounded in reality, based on our current beliefs.

Current Beliefs Can Hinder Progress

But therein lies the problem. It’s based on our current beliefs. What if your beliefs run counter to something you want to accomplish? Maybe you want to attract an ideal mate but deep down, you feel unattractive? What if you want to make more money, but you have the mindset that money is hard to come by? What if you want to stop smoking, but you believe it’s impossible? What if you want to be more loving in your relationship, but your childhood programming makes you act otherwise?

Here’s where affirmations and self-hypnosis come in.

How Affirmations Work

The idea with affirmations is that you keep repeating the message until you convince your inner self. It’s a bit like brainwashing. Eventually, your critical factor gets tired and doesn’t listen. Then the affirmation can slip in and become the new belief. That’s why some psychologists will (wrongly) tell you that it takes 6 weeks to create a new habit. If all you use is willpower, it takes about 6 weeks for the willpower to beat up the critical factor.

But is there anything you can do to speed up the process?

Make Affirmation Work Faster

Sure! The more you involve emotions and your imagination, the more powerful your affirmations will be. Both emotion and imagination help bypass your critical factor and allow messages to get to your inner mind. But there’s a process that is designed to help you bypass your critical factor, and get new beliefs programmed in much more quickly. It’s called hypnosis.

In fact, one definition of hypnosis is, ‘the bypass of the critical factor, and the establishment of selective thinking’. Selective thinking just means concentrating on an idea. And when you bypass your critical factor and then concentrate on your goal, your programming is much more effective.

Now, it ain’t magic! You won’t be able to fly (without an airplane or jetpack), or suddenly dunk a basketball. But within the realm of possibilities, you’ll improve. This way, more levels of your mind will be oriented toward your goals, and that will make it much easier.

Building Skill With Self-Hypnosis

One mistake people make though, when thinking about self-hypnosis, is not realizing that hypnosis is a skill. Your ability to put yourself into a receptive state can be radically improved by practicing some simple techniques.
