Understanding the answer to this question, and how it applies to NLP, can change the way you think forever. Whether to become a better practitioner, or just get better at life…understanding these foundational concepts can be a game changer for anyone.

Don’t worry – the page will open in a new window so you can easily come back and read the rest of this post – which is highly informative and totally worth your time.

What can you expect to learn when through this kind of training?

We’ll go through the different skills in further detail together.

This kind of training generally takes about one or two weeks of study. During the course, you’ll learn a number of different things that will give you a better idea of the origins of NLP and how it works, as well as how to use it in everyday life.

Most training courses contain curriculum, including:

Although this can vary from class to class, these will give you a general idea of what you will be learning in your training.

NLP helps us understand that our perception of the world is greatly colored by things like our current mood or our personal values. It is through this understanding that we can try to copy or “model” the stronger parts of our behavior to strengthen the weaker parts.

There are several different methods or techniques that can help achieve this.

In NLP, each person’s perception of the world is called their “map”. During your training, you will learn how both language and the mind can affect the perceptions of our map.

These maps can determine how you feel and act, and how you interact with other people. NLP training will teach you how to recognize that people have a hand in creating their map and knowing how poor behaviors or ideas can have a bad influence upon yourself and your map.

Not only will you be able to learn how to recognize these facts, but you’ll also be taught how to modify your bad behavior patterns (or other’s behavioral patterns) in order to help turn them into patterns that are much more helpful.

Anchoring is when you associate a specific kind of touch, sound, or sight to an emotional response. You’ll learn how such anchors can be used to help people bring out more desirable kinds of behavior, especially during a more stressful or weakened state of being.

This is a kind of pattern that helps you to interrupt a particular line of thought or behavior that is undesired. Once this pattern is broken, you’ll be able to bring out better behaviors. You’ll learn how to visualize such a cue to help with the interruption of bad behaviors, as well as how to bring out a more desired set of behavior afterward.

Modeling is another thing you may learn about during your NLP training. Essentially, this is when you learn how to take the language, behaviors, and even beliefs of another person and turn those parts into a kind of pattern that can then be used to help others.

Once those patterns have been learned, a person is able to try and adopt those new patterns into their own behavior patterns. This can help a person learn how to better parts of their lives, now that they have stronger tools to fall back on.

Alternatively, you can also learn how to take the best parts of a person and use those parts as a “model” so that the weaker and less desirable parts can learn how to mimic such behavior.

This is the practice of using specific questions and language to mine out the nuggets of information that you can find in all of the ways a person speaks. From word choices, to the way they hold themselves whilst speaking, all of these things can give you clues about a person and the way they feel.

This information can then be used to find the details of problems that might otherwise remain hidden. In turn, you’ll be able to use this method to work through those problems once you get them are out in the open.

Specifically, you’ll learn to recognize when a person is excluding words, or is generalizing a situation to hide behind their word choices. If someone is trying to hide their problems with their language patterns, then you’ll be able to zone in and pick apart those choices until those problems are no longer taboo.

NLP Training: An Overview
